For a real treat, stop by Montello Meat Market at the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids. It boasts a beautiful array of locally raised dry aged beef, pork, poultry, veal, lamb, goat, homemade sausages, and more. You’ll also enjoy the gregarious customer service and professional expertise of the Larson family. Visiting the Downtown Market is an educational opportunity to “engage in the process” as owner Tony Larson puts it, and Montello Meat Market is the epitome of that.
There’s not only a fabulous sight of the meats on display, there’s a full view of the walk-in cooler and butchering area where you can watch the pros in action. And at Larson’s, the process is as entertaining as it is educational. Don’t miss it. It is evident the extroverted staff believes in having fun while working hard! They’re also known for making each customer feel special, thanks to owner Tina Larson’s direction, “Try to be the nicest person you can be when someone stops by. You don’t know what kind of day they’re having or what’s going on in their life, so make sure you’re the nicest, warmest person they speak with that day.”
Tony and Tina Larson purchased Montello Meat Market in Holland in 2003. Since that time, three out of four adult children have become involved in the business. Having been involved the longest of any of the kids, their youngest Gracie is a key part of their business. Hayley, a graduate of Grand Valley and professional writer creatively contributes to the business along with her brother Sam, who attended University of Michigan is a graphic designer and executive butcher. They do all the communications work for Montello Meat Market. Recently, the Larson’s oldest son, Alex, married his longtime girlfriend Ayesha who he met during undergrad studies at University of Michigan. They live in New York City.
Embracing their belief in offering hormone-free, locally raised meats and their desire to provide meat that looks as good as it tastes, Montello Meat Market dry ages all beef to give it a deeper, richer taste. As Sam, the executive butcher says, “It’s not just butchered meat, it’s artisan crafted beef.”
In September 2013, Montello Meat Market opened at the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids. The Holland location is now a Freeze Locker offering freshly frozen packages for sale.
