“As a local retailer myself I know the importance of having “locals” support my store. Over the 47 years that I have been in business I have seen a lot of change in retail. Through all of that I have seen many individuals who have put their heart and soul into their business trying to meet the needs of their neighbors. I have also seen how many times we are asked to give back to our community, schools, sports teams, etc. When I shop locally I know that those dollars support not only the shop owner but also his/her family, employees and then the greater community.
“As a community leader in local government and now county government I know how important business areas are to the welfare of a community. Downtowns and their survival have an impact on the total community. Small businesses are dependent on local support. When asked about where my wife and I eat out on weekends we will proudly say that we eat at one of our local Grand Haven eateries because we know the owners or the wait staff and they know us.”
