The Shade Shop, Inc.

Boasting a rich history and unwavering family commitment to their business and Grand Rapids, The Shade Shop is a shining example of the strength of community dedication and customer loyalty. A true gem on the west side of the city, the Shade Shop has thrived for over 77 years, providing West Michigan with high-quality products, expert installation, and helpful service.

The business began in a boat house on the banks of the Grand River in the 1930s as a shade repair and cleaning establishment. Shortly thereafter, it moved to 343 Leonard Street and began manufacturing window shades under the name, The Shade Shop. In 1962, after several moves along Leonard Street, the shop moved to its current location, the historic Ritzema Building, constructed in 1910 at 422 Leonard Street.

As an important part of their history, The Shade Shop continues to offer window shades, yet over the years, they’ve expanded their product assortment to better meet customers’ needs. Under the leadership of husband and wife team, Barry and Susan McKey, The Shade Shop has become the first and only Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Gallery in the Grand Rapids area.

Barry and Susan McKey firmly believe it is The Shade Shop’s friendly, knowledgeable and respectful service that has earned them the ongoing patronage and trust of the community.
